The municipality has considerable industrial expertise, especially within electricity and energy-intensive industries. The cornerstone company in the municipality is Elkem Salten, which produces high-grade silicon for the global market. In 2021, the company opened a world-class energy recovery plant.
The municipality has a shielded fjord system with three deep water quays/industrial quays. Sørfold industrial quay at Elkem Salten is an ISPS Port with weekly container transport to Europe.
Sørfold is the host municipality for Benchmark Genetics, which is the world’s most advanced onshore facility for broodstock and roe production. In addition, the municipality has two modern smolt plants and grow-out facilities in water.
